What Pigment Problems can be Treated?

The most important thing is that any intervention does not make matters worse: some pigment problems can be associated with skin malignancy and it is most important that any potential problems are identified and dealt with properly.

The following conditions can be treated*

  • Uneven skin-tone, or patches of darker pigment.
  • An increase in skin pigmentation stimulated by hormones associated with pregnancy and use of the contraceptive pill.
  • Post inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (dark patches) caused by damage or inflammation of darker skin types.

We will always insist on our right to refer back to your GP in the event of any uncertainty: Some conditions may require a skin biopsy to confirm the diagnosis

We do not treat Melanocitic Naevi (pigmented moles) with a laser: because in this case the pigment acts as an early warning system, showing signs of change which can alert the individual to the possibility of cancerous changes to the mole itself. Removing the pigment removes the early warning system.

We will always refer moles to a dermatologist or our plastic surgeon for excision and biopsy.
