What is Smart Lipo?
Smart Lipo is a method of removing fat from the body which is much less invasive than the traditional forms of Liposuction. Because tiny tubes are used and the effect is brought about by Ultrasound energy many of the side effects of Liposuction are reduced or avoided. The post-treatment downtime is also much less.
How does it work?
Tiny incisions are made through the skin into the fatty layer below. A small 3mm diameter tube is then inserted, through which local anaesthetic is inserted to make the procedure more comfortable.
The Ultrasound probe is then inserted and moved backwards and forwards through the fatty tissues whilst emitting sound pulses to break down the fat. The Vaser loosens the fat cells, rather like picking up a bunch of grapes and shaking it.
The loose fat cells can then be removed from the area by aspiration. This is not as invasive as normal Liposuction as only the gentlest of suction is required so there is very minimal risk of damage to the tissues.
Following the procedure the tiny entry holes can be left open as this allows more fat to seep out over the next 48 hours. A return visit to the clinic is arranged to apply Nlite laser to the entry holes which heals them very quickly.
Are the effects permanent?
Our body contains a great many fat cells and it is not possible to remove them all. The remaining fat cells also possess a potential to swell to very large proportions. This means that if large amounts of weight are gained following the procedure the area may look the same as before. If weight is kept reasonably constant then the effects will be permanent. Once fat cells are removed from one area, some people report an increased incidence of fat gain in other areas of the body.
Are there any potential side effects?
As with all procedures, laser and surgical, there are potential side effects and problems but they are minimised with this method.
Bruising is lessened because the Ultrasound probe is so small which reduces any bleeding to a minimum. However it is possible to get a deep bruise or "haematoma" in the treatment area which can be uncomfortable for some weeks but will settle.
Rarely it is possible for the fat to be removed and broken down in an uneven distribution which can be visible through the skin.
The risk of skin burning, which is present with Laser fat removal, is not a problem with Vaser which is partly why we swapped systems. Our other reason was to increase the volume of fat removed at each procedure.
How much fat can be treated at one time?
Up to 2 litres of fat can be removed at one time but if more than one area is done then the overall volume is spread over all the areas and still much the same.
This is not a treatment for obesity or even for clients looking to lose large amounts of weight but it is ideal for small pockets of fat which do not respond to diet and exercise. It is possible to repeat treatment on other body areas or even on the same area to further reduce volume.
Which areas can be treated?
Smart Lipo is suitable for more areas than traditional Liposuction. It works well on upper arms, upper and lower abdomen, "love-handles", saddlebags, hips, knees and backs. It can also be carried out under the chin.
Before treating on abdominal areas we carry out an ultra sound scan to check for undiagnosed hernias or other problems which are not visible through the skin. This is a painless and quick procedure and ensures your safety.
