BTEC Laser and Light 2011
The Autumn 2011 BTEC programme is the most ambitious week that we have ever attempted as we continue to move the Qualifications out of the lecture room and into clinic and minor operations rooms.
The programme is based upon the usual expert delivery involving lectures and support from
Jo Martin Clinical Director, Mapperley Park
Mrs Sarah Pape Consultant Plastic Surgeon, Royal Victoria Hospital, Newcastle
Mr Bruce Braithwaite Consultant Vascular Surgeon, Nottingham Hospital Trust
Paul Stapleton Managing Director, Mapperley Park
Stan Batchelor Head of Radiation Physics, Guys and St Thomas Trust, London
Peter Bennett Optical Safety Specialist, LaserPhysics Limited
This expertise, while it can be transferred effectively through a formal lecture programme becomes truly relevant when demonstrated against the range of available equipment, with this programme delivering at least 10 practical sessions against 20 laser and light treatment modalities, showcasing systems from at least 12 different manufacturers. The demonstration programme will cover the following applications
Q-switched lasers for tattoo and pigmented lesions Ruby and Nd:YAG 532, 694 and 1064nm
Hair removal applications Alexandrite, Nd:YAG, Diode and IPL 755, 800-810, 1064nm and Broadband light
Vascular lasers Nd:YAG, Pulsed Dye and Diode lasers 532, 585, 595, 940, 980 and 1064nm
Non ablative systems Pulsed Dye, Nd:YAG, Near IR and RF 858, 1064 – 1500 and Radio frequencies
Ablative lasers Erbium and CO2 2790, 2970 and 10,600nm
All this knowledge and expertise will be smoothly transferred and assessed through a programme of in-course assessment and feedback.
Finally, work-place assessment is carried out through the completion of a log-book and a 3,000 word Case Study, demonstrating the application of skills and knowledge in a clinical setting.
This course is the most comprehensive and practical laser training course available today.

Welcome to our Autumn/Winter Laser Training Programme
The Mapperley Park Laser Training programme is now in its 10th year with the BTEC awards now in their 8th.
For 2011, we have two Core of Knowledge days remaining as follows:
Weds 2nd November Bloomsbury London
Weds 11th December Mapperley Park Nottingham
We believe – and our client feedback confirms - that these knowledge days are vital in ensuring a clear and unimpeded understanding of laser and IPL basics for everyone; from the completely new to the relatively experienced, for there is always something to learn and always a new angle from which to assimilate a truly expert understanding. If you are thinking about introducing lasers – or if you want to extend your rang, the Core of Knowledge is the place to start.
We are also preparing now for our November BTEC Skin course which will be the most comprehensive yet.
Monday 7th to Friday 11th November Nottingham
We have a packed agenda of lectures, testing and assessment lined up here but more importantly, we have 10 practical sessions against 20 laser and light treatment modalities, showcasing systems from at least 10 different manufacturers. This an unparalleled exposure to real equipment in a real-world setting and will be supported by products and experts from – at the time of going to press - Aestheticare, ABC, Candela, Carleton, Cynosure, Fotona and Syneron.
Finally, we are already offering a 10% discount to Hamilton Fraser customers and are prepared to extend this 10% discount to ALL NEW bookings in order to completely fill our Autumn programme.
Very useful, given me a good knowledge base

2012 Developments
BTEC London delivery: recognising that it is difficult for busy London-based practitioners to take the time to leave their practice and spend an entire week with us in Nottingham, we have decided to bring the BTECs to London. We have been delivering Core of Knowledge training in the heart of London (Bloomsbury) for 4 years now and believe that it is time for the BTECs to take to the road.
This will be a significant logistical feat as we intend to continue to demonstrate treatment principles against latest technology in a clinical setting; however, we have determined that it can be done and with even greater support from our manufacturer colleagues, we intend to deliver in Spring 2012.
We are also developing a range of on-line resources allowing BTEC delegates – and other subscribers – to access a support forum and learning materials, such as lecture slides and course notes, remotely and in their own time.
We believe that this is the first step towards a true remote learning capacity with advanced students theoretically able to submit a BTEC portfolio on the basis of their own learning without having to attend course delivery elements (although they would miss out in doing so).
This development will also help support training delivery in other countries and we are now in discussions with parties in Malta, Qatar and India interested in supporting BTEC delivery in those and other countries. If you have a particular interest in this development, please let us know for we would be happy to discuss.
Hopefully, you can see that at Mapperley Park, we are not standing still as the world changes around us but are investing and developing to meet these changes. We would like to thank all of our previous course delegates whose critical feedback has allowed us to identify what we could best do to improve our delivery and keep it relevant in a fast changing sector.
Masterclass; October 2011
October 2011 will see us adding a short series of one-day Nottingham master-classes in hair removal, tattoo removal and vascular treatments. We have been developing these practical, skill based treatment days over the last couple of years and, having successfully delivered a series of pilots, we now plan to extend and expand for regular delivery.
These are not manufacturer delivered events designed to tie you to that manufacturer’s product range but independently delivered, hands-on training days using the range of equipment that we use on a day-to-day basis in our own clinic. Where we don’t use a particular technology (for example, we don’t use diode lasers or IPL for hair removal), we will invite manufacturers to demonstrate that technology against the syllabus.
Each training day has been carefully designed to provide theory elements, tying practical delivery to an easily digested ‘Core of Knowledge’ delivered by Paul Stapleton. The practical workshops, delivered by our clinical director, Jo Martin will be delivered against the range of typical treatment technologies and techniques. You will see example treatments on model-tissue and live skin in the form of model- volunteers.
Finally, we will tie things together in summary and provide attendance certificates that will cover CQC and Local Authority requirements in respect of on-going and Core of Knowledge training.
We believe that this will be a useful addition to our training portfolio, bridging the theory-only Core of Knowledge to the BTEC qualifications.
The BTEC Programme
We have been delivering the BTEC professional awards since 1994, in which time they have evolved from a dry academic delivery to the vibrant, hands on courses that we deliver today. Rather than spending all of the time in the classroom, most of the time is now spent in clinic rooms assessing treatment theory against actual outcomes across a huge range of lasers and associated technologies.
In Spring 2011 BTECs, delegates engaged in practical demonstrations and assessed outcomes against QS Ruby, QS ND:YAG 1064/532, Alexandrite 755/Nd:YAG1064 and diode 810, CO2 and Erb:YAG ablative and fractional, Near IR and RF thermal devices, Vascular 532,585/595/940/1064 plus IPL, Dermaroller and Low-level light. That is 20 modalities from 13 different suppliers considered over 18 hours of workshops. These are the most comprehensive and information-rich courses available in lasers and light today – and we only intend to improve from here.
We are also fortunate in being able to count on the continuing support of a number of high-end manufacturer distributors including in the last series, Alma/ABC, Candela, Carlton/Iridex, Chromogenex, Cynosure, Dornier, and Syneron.
How to survive the financial squeeze
The Laser and Light sector has been through some tough times in recent years. A continuing recession combines with Government deregulation to produce the ‘perfect storm’ for professional practitioners. Low-cost providers pop up all around like unwelcome mushrooms in everything from hair and tattoo removal to medical injectables – supported by the likes of Groupon and predicated on a general dumbing-down in the media of the issues surrounding what are potentially harmful, medical interventions.
So, just as demand for our services comes under most pressure from squeezed consumer wallets, government’s controversial deregulation (and failure to regulate injectables) allows absolutely anyone to use any laser device for any purpose without any training, thereby opening the floodgates to Chinese manufacturers selling sub-standard equipment to new, low-cost providers. This could be economic policy written in Beijing.
The good news is that, like mushrooms, low-quality providers soon disappear on their own account; the bad news is that others appear to take their place. So, how do we deal with this double assault on our business and to our professional standing?
At Mapperley Park, we have countered the flood of cheap, inexpert service providers not by competing with them but by separating ourselves in terms of service, quality, safety and cost. We have invested in new technology – both high-end lasers and in creating a locally commanding Web presence – in order to promote our message that while we won’t be the cheapest, we will be the best. This strategy has allowed us to increase our prices in line with inflation, rather than reducing them to that of the lowest common denominator and while we have seen volumes fall from the peak of 2007, what we do is worth us doing and we are a more profitable business than we were at the peak of the boom. Our solution: keep service quality high and differentiate that service from the rest in terms of price and message.
Training in a recession
In our training business, we have also seen volumes fall as regulatory training requirements have been removed and competition increased. However, we have met these challenges not by reducing costs but by increasing value and relevance such that we now believe our training courses to be absolutely the best in the business – and the feedback from those courses supports this belief.
Now, as an increased appetite among providers to invest in training becomes apparent, we are investing to support an eventual return to growth in the sector and consequently, we have a number of new developments for Autumn 2011 and 2012.
In recognition of this training excellence, the insurance industry leader, Hamilton Fraser, have also accredited us as a Hamilton Fraser Training Partner and offer a 10% premium discount for any person or organisation sending an individual to one of our training events , so there is even more reason to engage in our training programme than ever

Due to un-seasonal demand – and concern over upcoming deregulation/VAT issues – Mapperley Park Training is adding a Core of Knowledge date for Wednesday August 18th.
The day will be tailored to provide as much information as possible about the shape of upcoming regulatory changes. Partial deregulation is the first of many changes to come in my opinion, and will lead to a broadly deregulated, fully VATable cosmetic sector within a short time-frame (the wholesale abolition of CQC would allow deregulation and VAT levy of all surgical cosmetic practice very quickly – quite a prize). The consequent ‘de-medicalisation’ of the sector poses questions, creates threats and of course opportunities in a new and dynamic landscape that looks very difficult to predict. We will of course cover the MHRA 2008 syllabus, hence plenty of interesting layman’s physics and some GCSE photobiology - but less of the safety side for thanks to government lead in deregulation, we now know that lasers and IPL are safe for anyone to use, anywhere (what could possibly go wrong; said Jeremy). In all seriousness, with this week’s abolition of HPA, nothing is safe in the regulatory world and it would be sensible to review current Health and Safety regulation rather than spend time on ‘local’ Health and Safety detail. So, please join us in this holiday time for a little mental stimulation and information and be a little more ready for what may be thrown at us on October 1st.
Whether you are new to the industry or an experienced medical practitioner or beauty therapist, the Core of Knowledge covers the basic curriculum for lasers and light, as laid down by MHRA and until Oct 1st, is a legal requirement for CQC registration. If you have already sat one of our courses and you are looking for a CPD update, the Core of Knowledge day will provide a refreshing review and we are currently offering a 30% discount for previous Mapperley Park Training attendees.

Did you know that from October 1st 2010, for the same laser/ILS treatment* you may be:
Required to register with the Care Quality Commission (CQC)
Forbidden to register with the CQC
Have the option to register with the CQC
*depending on whether you are a medical professional
From October 1st 2010*, you will find yourself either:
Regulated by the CQC
Licenced by your local authority
Both of the above
None of the above
*depending on whether you are a medical professional and your postcode
Confused?
Then why not join us on our Core of Knowledge Training Day and find out all about it. Paul Stapleton, who leads the day has been involved* with discussions with Government Ministers, the Department of Health and CQC on the future of regulation for lasers and light and has up-to-date knowledge of the state of play. You will also learn more about lasers and IPL – what they are and what they are not; what they can do and what they cannot. You will review the latest technologies and consider the myths and the truth behind the most exciting sector in medical aesthetics.
Whether you are new to the industry, an experienced medical practitioner or beauty therapist, the Core of Knowledge covers the basic curriculum for lasers and light, as laid down by MHRA and is a legal requirement for CQC registration. The future for regulation of lasers and ILS
You will all know something of the shenanigans surrounding the future regulation of lasers and intense light sources (laser/ILS) and I hope that it will be useful to summarise where we have been, where we are now and where we might be going.
You will probably know that in February 2008, the Department of Health (DH) pulled a surprise out of the hat by proposing the deregulation of ‘non-surgical’ laser/ILS for April 2009 to coincide with the abolition of the Healthcare Commission (HC) and the creation of its replacement, the Care Quality Commission (CQC). These changes are connected with the abolition of the Care Standards Act 2000 (CSA2000) and the publications of new regulations arising from the Health and Social Care Act 2008 (HSCA2008) in April 2010.
To cut a long story short, industry objections to this proposal to deregulate caused DH to withdraw its proposal ahead of further consideration with laser/ILS remaining in regulation until at least April 2010. On March 30th 2009, DH published its formal response and confirmed continuing CQC regulation of laser/ILS until October 2010. Consequently, there will be a continuing need to manage registration and inspection with the CQC. It is a complete unknown as to what their approach to laser/ILS users will be but it might be wise to be well prepared for our new regulator.
Looking beyond October 2010, the DH consultation response indicated that further regulation would not carried out by the CQC or according to HSCA2008 but through ‘alternative’ regulation which DH would be exploring with the sector and representative bodies.
It is not known what this will actually mean in practice but there is clearly everything to play for and in everyone’s interest to be involved – whether you support continued regulation or would prefer to see deregulation. The representative body that I will be working with is the Independent Healthcare Advisory Services (IHAS) and I will be keeping Salon readers advised of IHAS progress through this slot so please watch this space…

Current regulation to continue.....
In 2008, the government’s plans to de-regulate lasers and light were overturned and it was thought that current regulation would only be maintained until April 2010. Mapperley Park is now delighted to learn that Cosmetic Class 3b/4 Lasers/IPL’s will remain under the current regulation scheme until October 2010 and not as previously stated April 2010. The Department of Health is working with the sector to develop an alternative approach to registration with the Care Quality commission, who will be taking over from the Healthcare Commission on 1st April 2009.
