Who are Edexcel?

Edexcel was the first of the three unitary awarding bodies established to offer both academic and vocational qualifications, following the Stafford Review of exam standards in 1995. Edexcel was formed in 1996 by the merger of the Business & Technology Education Council (BTEC) the country's leading provider of vocational qualifications and the University of London Examinations & Assessment Council (ULEAC), one of the major exam boards for GCSEs and A levels.

The name “Edexcel” was originally derived from ‘educational excellence'.

Edexcel's vision:'To be the number one choice for qualifications in our selected markets'.

Their mission: 'To enable recognition of achievement by providing great qualifications which are easy to deliver, enthuse learners and enable progression'.

Edexcel is committed to providing qualifications and support for those who want to study for enjoyment, to further a career, re-train for the modern market place or develop skills for the future. It has the specific aim of promoting high quality, work-related and vocational training programmes and BTEC qualifications which are recognised by employers, educational institutions and professional bodies throughout the UK and abroad.

What are BTEC Awards?

BTEC qualifications from Edexcel are industry recognised, flexible, skills-based, vocational qualifications. The BTEC brand has been well established for over 20 years and is highly regarded by employers and higher education institutions throughout the UK and overseas.

The BTEC Award is a flexible way of achieving a qualification and is intended as a short qualification of study. The BTEC Award programme provides a range of flexible, short-study qualifications tailored to a particular client group, which allow for re-skilling, updating or retraining.

Each qualification is based around 'units' which vary in size or notional learning hours. Notional learning time can include classroom contact time, preparation reading/revision, coursework, assessment time, etc.

How will I be assessed?

Each qualification contains assessment criteria which state what a candidate must be able to ‘identify, explain, describe, or be able to do' as a result of completing the unit. When you attend the qualification you will be assessed via: written tests, worksheets, practical exercises, ‘role play' consultations and completion of post course work.

The post-course work involves a case-study and log book. To carry out the post course work you will need access to a clinic or salon that will allow you to observe or undertake treatments. If you expect to have difficulties in completing the post coursework because you do not have access to clients, please let us know before you start the course.

How long will it take to get the qualification?

You get up to 5yrs to complete the coursework but most candidates return their work within 6-9 months of attending the course. Although the BTEC programmes allow for short courses of study, it can take several months to be awarded the qualification due to process of collating assessments and portfolio work, marking, internal verification and visits to Loughborough College by the External Verifiers to check the quality and standards of the qualifications. Certificates of Attendance can be issued immediately but you may have to wait to receive your qualification certificate.

Who ensures the educational standards?

We must ensure that all teaching and assessment material meets quality standards with stringent Internal and External Verification procedures.

Internal Verification is the process of matching the assessment criteria from each unit against the candidate's performance and work. The Internal Verifier is appointed by Mapperley Park and the External Verifier is appointed by Edexcel. These quality standards procedures include:-

Before the course - checking teaching materials and practical worksheets, checking written examination papers

During the course- observing classroom teaching and practical work, meeting with students and tutors

After the course- marking coursework and papers, sampling practical assessments and examination papers, talking to students
