It is a well known fact that ladies mouths develop lines and wrinkles more than men. Even Roald Dahl noticed it, in his wonderful description of Grandma, in George's Marvellous Medicine: "she had a puckered up mouth like a dog's bottom" This was a phrase which simply never failed to have my children in gales of laughter and yet, as one approaches a similar fate, it doesn't seem quite so funny!

But why do ladies mouths pucker so much more than our male counterparts? Is there any anatomical reason for it? Well, scientists in the far east have been very interested to find out exactly why and have come up with some very interesting facts.

In order to examine the differences they took top lip skin samples from hundreds of male and female corpses, not for the faint hearted this work, and examined them. What they discovered was very interesting as there are three main differences between male and female top lip skin:

1) female skin contains far fewer sweat and oil glands and therefore does not moisturise itself so well
2) Female skin does not have such a good blood supply and therefore will not have such good skin cell turnover capacity, especially with advancing age
3) The skin on female lips is much more tightly adhered to the underlying muscle, making it more easy for the skin to be wrinkled regularly through eating movements and, dare I say this, speech, although far be it from me to suggest that we talk too much.

I find all of this fascinating and I am keen to lend a helping hand to all ladies out there who may be concerned about their fate. We cannot do anything about these problems directly, but we can keep your lips looking good for the foreseeable future.
