SERVICE SPECIFIC STANDARDS

The Core Standards are supplemented by seven service-specific Standards:

P	Prescribed techniques / technologies
PD	Private Doctors
TP	Termination of Pregnancy

P-STANDARDS

The Service-specific Standards relevant to laser/IPL/LHE TM systems fall under the Prescribed techniques/technologies Standards. These are also known as the ‘P-Standards', where treatments are provided using certain techniques and technology.

There are three P-Standards relevant to lasers. P-Standards P1 to P3 cover both Class 3B and Class 4 lasers and Intense Pulsed Lights, which are:

Procedures for Use of lasers & Intense Pulsed Lights

• Patients receive treatment using lasers and intense pulsed lights from competent operators and in accordance with appropriate procedures'.

Training for staff using lasers and Intense Pulsed Lights

• Patients receive treatment from appropriately trained operators

Safe Operation of Lasers and Intense Pulsed lights

• The environment in which lasers and intense pulsed lights are used is safe

The main aspect to the P-Standards is around laser/IPL safety. This is largely supported and written by a Laser Protection Adviser.

PD-STANDARDS

The Service-specific Standards relevant to services provided by private medical practitioners (e.g. Botox ® , fillers, Lipostabil) fall under the Private Doctors Standards. These are also known as the ‘PD-Standards', and apply to:

- Private walk-in medical centres, where services are provided by a medical practitioner

- Exclusively private medical practitioners (i.e. those who do no NHS work at all)

There are 12 PD-Standards. PD1 – PD8 refer to Independent Clinics. PD9 – PD12 refer to independent medical agencies. The 12 PD-Standards are:
